Unfortunately for us, this was the case with our "carefully chosen" automation installer. We found Cabling Technologies because an alert staffer stopped by our project one day to see if there was an opportunity for Cabling to get involved. That first interaction was enlightening, and I arranged to meet Brian and Kieran the next day. I was reasonably confident that I had a strong understanding of the scope of work. I simply needed a firm that could execute the vision. The problem for me was that the vision wasn't standard. It included the installation of audiophile-class components from another vendor and required working directly with and alongside the audio company. Overall the project was quite complex, requiring full integration of whole-house lighting, two-hundred zones of security, audiophile-class audio equipment integration, full video integration, complex firewalled network support and plenty of programming to make it all work. Our initial meeting was very productive. The team at Cabling was clearly very knowledgeable and I was immediately impressed by their willingness to step into a project that was already designed, specified and half-finished. Brian and his team stepped into a hornet's nest of hundreds of miles of wiring that they did not install. They tested and mapped every inch and provided me with excellent documentation. We reviewed the plan with the audio vendor and the teams got to work. Throughout the process, Brian and his team made excellent recommendations that enhanced the system's capability. It was not unusual for them to lower the total price of the system. The Cabling team worked closely with the architect and the interior designer too. Both were quite impressed with his ability to meet scheduled milestones and adapt to changing design conditions. Ultimately, this is one of the most powerful things that Brian and his team bring to the table: The ability to adapt creatively to the always changing aspects of a large project. When the going got tough, Brian and his team never gave up and never compromised. They worked to promote creative, cost-efficient solutions to the problems that invariably arise on any job. Regardless of the day-to-day issues, I always felt that the "Cabling Commitment" meant that the needs of the client and the requirements of the project always came before the needs of the company. Project follow-up has been unparalleled. Brian and his team have made sure that problems are resolved quickly. I have special affinity for Kieran O'Hara and Derrick Yanez. Both are tireless advocates for "doing it right" every time they do anything. The staff is professional and trustworthy. They have complete access to the property even when we're not there. The economics of the installation business favor standardization and that's why so many firms sell the same cookie-cutter solutions no matter what the ultimate requirement might be. From a short term business perspective, this makes sense because firms become very efficient by providing the same solutions over and over. The good news for Cabling clients is that Brian and the team is in it for the long term. Creating a lasting relationship based on satisfaction and trust is more important to Brian than short term profit. In the end, that's clearly the better strategy – especially in their business. At the design phase they worked well with me to spec the equipment needed and were understanding and flexible to change the equipment and installation needed as my goals for the project changed. Around that time the main salesperson from CT left the firm but that did not create any problem, actually it turned out to be more positive since I had direct contact with Brian who was very helpful and able to resolve all the technical issues. In the actual hands-on work I found Darrick who did most of the hardware installation to be knowledgeable, responsive and well above average in the quality of his work. My overall experience with the company was positive and if I compare with my experience with other entities involved in this relatively large project I would rate it as very positive.
